Scoithniamh

Gender: Feminine
Pronunciation: SKUH-nyeev, SKUH-nyee-av
Meaning: Lustrous blossom

Love Niamh, but find it a bit too common? Then read on. Scoithniamh derives from the Irish words scoth, meaning "blossom" and níam meaning "lustre, sheen, brilliance" (same origin as Niamh). In the Middle Irish narrative Agallamh na Seanórach (The Colloquy of the Ancients), which describes the journeys of Saint Patrick with Oisín and Caoilte mac Rónáin, Scoithniamh is the name of a beautiful sióg (fairy), a daughter of the god Bodhbh Dearg, whom they meet. She is described as "a lone woman robed in mantle of green, a smock of soft silk being next her skin, and on her forehead a glittering plate of yellow gold." In the Gaelic type, this name is written Scoiṫniaṁ.
